Written like a fat ass who has never set foot in a gym. I have worked
out thousands of times in the past twenty years in several clubs. I
have yet to witness any fat person being jeered.
Fat people being harrassed at the gym is just a self-serving myth
perpetuated by the fat acceptance movement. |

I concur that as someone who has worked out at gyms for over 20 years,
I've never observed overweight people being jeered. We all have our
issues. |

I've never seen it either -- but I do sometimes think it (Good Lord!
Is that The Second Coming or what!! I wonder if it's them breaking
all the machines!)...maybe they can read minds? No, I don't stare or
anything.
And I say that as someone who's obese according to the height-weight
charts, though folks routinely imagine me in perfect shape (fat seems
to "only" accumulate on my thighs! And the funny thing is, they
accumulate "strategically" such that I can still flex and show okay
separation of quadriceps). Even when in my best shape ever in the
Army I was considered obese according to those charts, but now at 220
lbs. (down from 240 January First this year!) I would tend to agree
with them!
One thing I do dislike is when some fatty or skinny is on the ab
machine for half an hour doing the third or fourth easiest setting
(like twenty pounds or something) with minutes-long breaks in-between
sets. But I'm perfectly polite about it all; I wouldn't want to
discourage them. |

I hate to agree with someone so rude, but I've yet to see it too.
I remember when I was overweight FEELING like everybody were looking at me,
and laughing at me, but I soon realized that nobody was (actually, I got a
lot of good advices and encouragements by both staff and members).
After years at goal weight, and working out, I'm more than happy to see
someone "get started".

i have to admit that i have never been harassed at the gym. quite the
opposite. more people than not have started a conversation with me on
the basis of what they have seen me doing, and have been very
encouraging in general. Always a very positive experience. jenius |

And obviously read by an ass. Where did I say that the
harassment was at the gym?? The gym, after all, is today's
House of Atonement.

I didn't know you were part of the fat acceptance movement.
What I am referring to is the way the fat person is treated in
everyday life, and the assumptions people make about that person.
Most people care more about whether you look as if you're working
out. A woman who loses 100 pounds through weight loss surgery
will be treated better than if she had lost, say, a mere 12 pounds
through steady exercise.
Oh, and by the way, I don't happen to think that fat
acceptance
and weight-lifting are mutually exclusive concepts.

Agreed. My gym was very encouraging when I started at 385 pounds.
After I had been exercising a few months, they told me they had
expected me to quit after three weeks like all the other fat people
who sign up. |

Here are a couple of things you can do to help:
1) Go to your local gym and demand some fat-friendly exercise pro-
grams. It is mystifying to me why fat people are made to feel unwelcome
at
some gyms, when it is obvious they are there to improve their health,
like
anyone else. After all, isn't a gym where a fat person ought to be?

I have been in gyms all over the country after 25 plus years of weight
training, and have NEVER seen an over weight person anything but
encouraged and supported when they start going to te gym. Everyone feels
self conscious when they step into a new environment and think others
there may be judging them, but it's rarely the case in actuality.

You should attend a NAAFA meeting or join one of the fat acceptance

Being fat as a December hog 365 days a year should be a hate crime. It's
unprovoked assault on the eyes of anyone who looks at you.
You can fuck off with that hate crime crap for fatties too, you 3000 pound
shit pipe. I hate looking at you fat fucks swaying down the freezer
aisles of supermarkets dragging two shopping carts piled high with every
damned thing you should not be eating. Frozen pie, ice cream, frozen
cake, donuts, potato chips, sponge cake, crappy Banquet TV dinners,
brownie mix, cases of soda and one little bitty bunch of bananas. How the
fuck are you EVER going to lose any weight sitting on your ass watching TV
and eating that kind of shit?
It should be illegal for you fat fucks to buy unhealthy food. |

Yeah, several years ago some guys in the weight room sniggered about my
fat ass.
I kept going and lost the fat ass. They, however, are still asses.

Wrong. Any excuse to support the lack of resolve and effort to lose weight
is acceptable to fatties. "Well they made me feel bad so I can't go to the
gym anymore." BS. |
