because of all this celebrity "fame" arrayed against them! The post
SUPPORTS the work these people are doing. It says NOTHING about
SHOOTING THEM (except with a camera perhaps to show them on TV) and
nothing about BOYCOTTING them! It's about the use of these celebrities
to remove all guns in private hands (except for those held by

My number two son was an actor in Hollywood, but only bits parts, stand-ins,
etc. He met, and worked with, Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Jessica Love
Hewitt (he said they were all very nice) and some others who were not, so
I'm not mentioning them. Anyway, he confirmed something that I read about
some actors. The comment was about Sean Penn, and how he had not graduated
from high school, and James Dean, who was functionally illiterate, having to
have scripts read to him. The comment was that they were probably great
actors because they had no persona of their own, but could, like a
chameleon, take up any persona. So I've never worried too much about
anything that an actor says because they may, or may not, actually know
"what" they are saying. Not only do you not know what they mean, they
probably don't know what they mean either.

Ditto for authors. I've met a great number - the lesser lights (i.e., Gerald
Posner, Martin Gilbert, Judith Martin, etc.) were uniformly gentelmen and
ladies. Some of the greater lights (Leon Uris, Herman Wouk, Judy Blume,Sid
Caesar, Eli Weisel, etc.) were likewise unfailingly polite and friendly.
There were a few bastards, always among the high-falutin'. For example, the
bookfair with which I was involved had author "sponsors." For $100, an
organization got the privlege of introducing the author to the assembled
crowd. That's it. One author objected to being "sponsored." David Broder
said his impartiality was his coin in trade and he couldn't be affiliated,
no matter how slightly, with ANY group.

"This is not the KKK, for cryin' out loud!" I tried to explain. "This is the
Anti-Defamation League of B'nai Brith!" Still no go. So, I thanked him for
his consideration and told him to go fuck himself.

You can imagine what I told Marvin Kalb when he insisted on a helicopter
ride from the airport to the bookfair...

I would advocate that the british people rise up against the government, and
create a republic, but we'd need guns to do that, stacks of guns. And the
only people with guns are the army, the police and some crooks. Our
governments have done well in disarming the populace.
