If you live among criminal thugs then you get what you deserve.

Presumably everyone is free to choose where they live. These two
people chose badly and paid the ultimate price for their error.

We don't even know where they lived, number one, and number two, the area
where the attack took place is a fairly expensive area by the water. Bay
Shore south of Montauk highway near the bay is a lot different than the
"General's Alley" section north of Sunrise.
