Default school, diet, and weight

Hi folks, i need some suggestions before i lose my waistline. I had a
job working at least 8-12 hours, in the medical field..I have always
been proud of being over 40, wearing size 5 jeans, at a weight of
#175..i'm an ex-pro bodybuilder..my job constantly kept me on the move,
and because i was so "familiar" with what i did, it was pretty much
rhetorical, and i didn't have to "think about what i do so much"..

Now, things have changed, I'm in school, and learning a new skill
level, that involves mostly brain, and not as much physical activity.
I'm still working with patients in my internship, but i have noticed
that the only way, i am comfortable in this environment is to eat
enough so that i won't be so "ditzy", or doing without apetite
suppressants, so that i won't be so "tense" or "Jumpy" around patients,
or workout without going overboard, so that my thinking won't be so
"scattered" when studying for midterms and finals..

We are evaluated at all times during clinical rotation...and when
you're not eating enough(ditzy), or jumpy from using only ONE
hydroxycut in the morning, it's pretty easy to get irritated working
with patients - especially their relatives..

the learning curve is higher in this college, and i don't want to
sacrifice grades for my physique..We were all told in our class that
for every semester, most of the students gain at least 10-15 lbs.this
is due to the intensity of the course..i'm trying to be an exception to
the rule, but it's like this strange cycle...

I have observed that some of you guys are pretty "hardcore" in your
responses to others, thus, i know i'm going to get my ass kicked after
posting, that's happened in the past, but, i'll take what i can get at
this point, and thanks in advance if any of you have any helpful
suggestions...

How about you do what you have to do right now and worry about the
weight gain after you graduate and have the physical and mental time to
deal with it?

10-15 lb. is nothing. I've lost (and gained) up to 80 lbs. in the past.

I wish I had it that easy. ;-)

I've done that twice now.

What it's taken is a permanent lifestyle change, not a diet. The re-gain
is coming off much more slowly this time, and I'm okay with that.

I also work in health care. You have too big of a responsibility to your
clients to screw around...

I think it was "How do I avoid stress eating?". Apparently, she's already
taken "How To Be Vague" 101.

As to weight gain from stress induced overeating, substitute something else.
As an ex-pro bodybuilder, you could easily substitute obsessively exercising
for obsessively eating.

Please don't substitute smoking.

Obsessive lesbian sex would be a good choice, and we'd appreciate some
jpegs/mpegs.

Omelet: thanks a lot..screwing around with people's lives is very
daunting.i agree..I guess, i just hate losing all of that hard-earned
work...but it will be worth it in the end..i'll keep "rockin' the
books" and worry about the weight later...it's just going to be an
up-hill battle getting it off..the older you get...the harder it is to
maintain..thanks again, omelet..you brought me back to the reality of
the healthcare field, and i am very sincere about that..

david, and bully, thank you so much for your responses..i believe i've
run into you or others like you on this forum before.."thank you, for

They're nothing compared to your written English skills.

You do know what to do, you just havent put much thought into it.
If you were formally into bodybuilding you know how much your daily
diet can make or break ones goals.
Now that you arent doing much exercise (any at all?) You need to eat
less. But quality over quantity.
How to eat less while stressed? Heh yeah I know 'desserts' spelled
backwards is 'stressed'. ;-)
But planning your meals is key. College students typically gain weight
because their eating habits are unplanned, undisciplined, and totally
crappy. You have to plan plan plan, to make the time to cook, package
up foods to take with you, and stay away from late night pizza binging
while studying.! Plan on eating more quality carbs for energy/mind
food.
Eating every few hours, even if its on the run btwn classes.
Determination to make good choices.
Choosing minicarrots over Snickers. You know this, you just need to
apply it.
Its like the scenery of your life has changed and the challenges are
new, but the eating is still back to basics.

And I agreed with your opinion about seat belt laws...for adults, at
least.

Are we both drunk, stoned, or having a collective nightmare (Twilight
Zone marathon on SciFi right now, so I discount no possibility)?

So, you think my suggestion to substitute exercise for stress induced
overeating was unworthy of you?

I sure hope you're good looking, because your personality sucks.

Yes I agree only for adults.

I am not drunk yet but I should be. New Years Eve is usually the best
party night of the year. Maybe I will go workout first and then go
get drunk.

A sexy MILF like yourself should just get a new boy toy, if the hubby
can't make you lose 10-15lbs.

thanks a lot joanne..yes, the scenery has changed drastically..it's
just "getting that balance" that can be quite frustrating..when you're
over 40, it's hard to keep the weight off, even when you're eating
healthy - but not exercising as much..This semester, i'm making a very
conscious effort to "plan, plan plan"...mainly on the exercise
routine...

lately, i have refined my eating habits, due to less energy
expenditure...i don't "stress eat" gawd, i can't imagine doing that to
my body..sometimes i didn't make very wise food choices when i'd leave
my pre-cooked meals at home, or just forgot to eat, then "make up" for
it..so, i really appreciate your experience and information...it keeps
reminding me to go back look over my basics again..

Omelet, i think most guys look good with "extra" weight...that's what's
so great if you're a male..women just say "he's just a big guy"...but
man, let a female gain 8 lbs, and she'll never hear the end of it..lol

as for the other folks "thank you for your input" it's very nice to
hear from you again...keep those emails coming, i'll look them over as
soon as i can...

Boy Toy is usually used to describe a woman, not a man. And hubbies
shouldn't be making their wives lose weight. At least not if they
plan on getting any in the near future. There is no safe answer to
"do look fat in this?".

I think she is looking for a magic pill to make it all go away. I
have a feeling the diet pills and sugar rushes are making her the way
she is. If she exercised to reduce stress she would probably feel a
whole lot better. But that takes hard work and motivation. I am just
surprised and ex-pro bodybuilder would need any help at all.

I've had a lot of experience observing the illiterate and the obtuse. You
stand out for a number of reasons. I think your lack of reading
comprehension is the primary one. You amuse us, so please don't leave like
your buddy the fake SEAL.

Sure, I have a suggestion. A low-volume strength program. Pavel's
"Power To The People!" http://www.kbnj.com/ptp.htm is a classic - two
lifts, each done for 2 sets of 5 reps with a 3-5 min rest between sets,
and done 5 times per week. Adjust to your schedule - do it only 2x/week
if that's all the time you have but do a few more sets, do 3 x 3 if 2 x
5 doesn't feel heavy enough, etc. This sort of training won't fatigue
you and it should leave you feeling better. One push and one pull
exercise. Pavel recommends the one-armed barbell side press and the
regular barbell deadlift, but you could pick exercises that suit your
schedule, available equipment, etc., and if you don't have time for two
exercise in a day, do one exercise one day and another the next. Short,
sweet, to the point, will make you feel better, not worse, and won't
take a lot of your time or energy. With only a kettlebell or dumbbell,
I'd do an overhead press plus a swing or snatch. Could be pushups and
rows, dips and pullups - lots of choices.

Another choice would be a ballistic/explosive exercise for reps with a
moderate weight, e.g., I find 1-2 minutes of non-stop kettlebell swings
with 1/3 to 1/2 bodyweight will keep me in good shape when my time is
short, and you literally need a minute or two and nothing more.

I am sure my reading comprehension far exceeds yours. When you start
thinking everyone around you is an idiot maybe you should start
looking at yourself.

For weights or just any old book? In fiction I finished one called
Second Genesis about a genetically altered chimpanzee. I haven't got
into reading anything new since summer but I have number of books
waiting. For weights I have been reading "The New Rules of Lifting".
Most stuff I just find on the web though. I don't tend to read the
nonfiction stuff in order or cover to cover. That is something I
picked up from my profession. There are too many nonfiction books to
read so I tend to read the parts which apply to what I am currently
working on. For instance there are two Linux books I recently
purchased and I need to complete.

I read a few "classic" weightlifting books this summer, 20 Rep Squats, Keys
to Progress, Kelso's Shrug Book, and some of Strossen's Stronger minds,
stronger bodies, or s/g to that effect. Interesting, but mostly anecdotal
and more applicable to young people looking to git hyuuge than to my current
goals.

Fiction, I read Updike's Run, Rabbit, Run, and started some Pynchon novels,
The Crying of Lot 49 seems to be the one to finish first. Non-fiction, lots
of supply chain management stuff and business books for school.
