| | | should pain - boxing Hello,
In addition to light weight training, I recently took up boxing for
fitness/cardio purpose. I've been working on
using heavy bag,
I notice that if I through straight punches, jabs, or "very
controlled" hooks, I'm ok.
But if I try and deep, looping punches ... my left shoulder has a
somewhat unstable feeling, near the back of the shoulder ... right
shoulder is just fine
I've hurt the left shoulder playing football in the past, I guess
there still something wrong there.
I will see a doctor/physio soon, but would appreciate any information
I can read up on so I have some background info.
Thank you |

Sounds like it could be a rotator cuff injury, but anyway, any online
diagnosis is going to be pretty useless compared to a doctor visit.
P.S.: You shouldn't be throwing haymakers (i.e., uncontrolled hooks)
at a bag, in the ring, or on the street. |

Sounds like you need to visit a boxing gym and have someone show you
some technique.

It worked for Jerry Cooney. Just ask Ken Norton. |

not the case ... a regular hook punch is causing the pain
perhaps my post was poorly described, its not some crazy out of
control punching
again .. right shoulder is 100% ... |

I think I made it sound like I'm throwing out of control punches ...
not the case.
I only tried "looping" type punching in *one session* to test the
shoulder ... ok, still a bad idea, but its not a general practice for
me
I only throw straight punches, jabs, body shots, hooks, and rarely
some uppercuts
A normal hook punch, and uppercut will cause problems, so i'm staying
away from them for now ... pretty much ok otherwise
anyway, will look into rotator cuff problems before I see the doctor
Thanks again |

Someone who is familiar with the mechanics of punching may be able to
point out what the issue is. There are plenty of movement I know how to
do well, but when I have someone watch me, they observe a problem that I
wasn't aware of, and such problems are usually on one side only. I
didn't mean to suggest you didn't know what you're doing, but that
doesn't change the fact that an expert pair of eyes can be helpful, and
sometimes more helpful than a visit to the doctor.
Just my opinion, worth what you paid for it here on mfw.
