Grunt and Center: Victim Says Workout Shouts Led to NYC Gym Assault

He just can't help the grunting.

Nor can he help shouting "Woo-woo!" or "Great song!" or "Good burn," or -
inexplicably, "You go, girl!"

That's what a spin-class workout is all about, hedge-fund manager Stuart
Sugarman testified yesterday, taking the stand as the victim in the bizarre
case of a New York City gym assault.

"These are words that would get me charged up and really come out
automatically," Sugarman, 48, told a jury, describing the prologue to a
brutal spin-class smackdown that jangled his vertebrae and landed him in the
hospital for 10 days.

Manhattan prosecutors say that because of his annoying hooting and
bellowing, Sugarman was brutally tipped up and off his exercise bike last
summer by an irate stockbroker.

His antagonist, Christopher Carter, had been sitting two bikes down at an
Equinox gym at 85th Street and Third Avenue and was ticked off by the
distractions.

Carter is fighting a possible year in jail on the misdemeanor charges by
arguing that Sugarman provoked the incident.

Cops testified that Sugarman admitted giving Carter the finger and cursing,
and testimony by another "spinner" that when Carter shouted, "Shut up,"
Sugarman taunted, "Make me."

Those kind of people (obnoxious gratuitous grunters) should be ground up and
fed to cattle. Same for the worthless bastards who don't re-rack their
weights. Gyms would be nicer places to go and a helluva lot less crowded,
too.

I hate the powerlifters that totally fill up the leg press with every
#45 in the leg area, then LEAVE THEM FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO UNLOAD!

It's an entire upper body workout just unloading that damned thing.
It's one of the few things that really pisses me off, and that's saying
a lot...

There are generally over #700 of weights to be moved.

I generally just change my workout and go use the hack squat sled
instead.

Anything wrong with that?

So? I mean, you go there to lift stuff. What's so wrong with doing
something, which actually has some carry-over to the real world?

How about timing yourself on loading and unloading leg press machine?
Then uttering a big hurray, just because you beat your PR? ;-)

What I mean is that there is no good in getting pissed about stuff like
that. I've some training, and that's what I do when bad tide is upon
me. I force myself to look at things in a positive way. It's actually
quite surprising how much control our conscious mind can have over
underlying emotions.

Yeah, but I'd rather look down on those inferior people and feel all giddy
with anger rather than let it go and live a longer life without stress.

Ever heard of Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

I often work out "issues" at the gym. It's very effective therapy.

No, I didn't. Judging by the name, it could help some people.

I do upper and lower body on different days.
It's the bloody principle of the thing!

'cause it's RUDE to leave a machine loaded up when you are done!

<snicker> I suppose I could go over there on back and shoulder day and
do it. Really, it's the job of the gym monitor but unless the owner is
there, the slackers he pays to watch the place are too busy hitting on
the cardio bunnies to do their jobs.

Like I said, I just go use the hack squat. IMHO it's a better machine
anyway, just does not do the same thing.

I personally miss the old vertical leg press he used to have! I'd like
to put one in here at home.

Now, now. What did cows ever do to you that you hate them so much?
Besides, somebody might eat the beef and contract stupidity.
