Default stuck at 90 pounds for 3 months...

I'll try to keep this short. Im 6 foot 2 inches.. 210 pounds.

About 18 months ago I started working out again. I was a weakling and could
only work out with 40 pounds for 3 hours a day. (2 to 3 days a week)

Basically I would do standing curls.. 3 sets of 10 reps a day.
(I get confused with sets and reps...hopefully I said it right. )

then 3 sets of 10 a day...standing in same position as doing curls but
lifting the bar over the head..instead of curling.

then 3 sets of 10 a day...standing in same position as above...and lifting
over the head... but with palms facing outward instead of inward.

then 3 sets of 10 a day... of standing rows with knees bent.

after that I would take a 30 minute break and then start on 100 situps and
pushups.

During my entire workout I would slowly consume about 50 grams of protein
supplement/ powder throughout the workout... and then another 50 grams after
the workout.

This routine worked very well for me for the last 15 months.. I started
working with 40 pounds and am now working with 90 pounds.. But i've been
stuck on 90 pounds for the last 3 months !! Its driving me nutty. This
was my own technique I guess you could say ...and I never got any
professional advice on weightlifting.. I just felt it was a good routine and
worked great for me for awhile. But now im stuck.

I only work with a standard bars and weights.. I dont believe in all that
fancy , expensive equipment.. Whenever I see all that stuff, it feels like
work and a task...then I think about how much room it takes up in the house
and how expensive it is.... So I dont bother with that stuff. Though im
sure alot of you guys have that kind of equipment and love it. I would
just like to stay basic.

The hardest place I feel stuck is with the standing curls.. I try to figure
out what my weakness is when curling...and it feels like I need more muscle
in my lower back. Not sure though.

I almost feel like quittin like a puszy because I cant move up in weight
anymore. Its drivin me nuts. any advice would be much appreciated..

thx

John

Everything works but nothing works forever. You need a change in
routine. I also think it bizarre that you use the same weight for every
movement. Try varying your routine and weight.

Knock your routine down to 2 sets of eight and add full squats for 2
sets of 8.

Try working out 2 times a week. You are probably overtraining.

Is English your first language?

And it's taking you 3 hours a day to complete 3 sets of 10 reps of
standing curls, French press(?), overhead press, and rows?

Even throwing in the hundred pushups and situps and the half-hour
break that sounds like too much time involved. Pick up the pace.

Iirc, someone recently recommended 1 gram a pound of body weight per
day.

Someone else recommended switching to 2 sets of 8 reps and adding
squats to your routine. Another patron suggested you switch up your
routine as well.

I'll echo both of those bits of advice and offer that you might want
to Google "5x5 routine". And, bonus, that way you won't get sets and
reps mixed up.

Best of luck. Please post a follow-up.

3 hours to do a partial upper body routine? (You're missing triceps
work.) Wow. That's way too much time.
And what about lower body--squats, lunges, deadliifts (also works your
lower back), calf raises? All can be done barbells/dumbbells--no
fancy equipment needed.

To increase strength in your upper body, try increasing the weight to
an amount that you can only lift for 5 - 8 reps.
Do that x 3 sets.
Rest for 1 - 2 minutes between sets.

If you're also doing 100 pushups--you need to balance out your back
work. Give the pushups a rest. Start bench pressing (working the
same muscle groups, but in a different way.)
Add skull crushers for your triceps.
Again--5-8 reps x 3; resting 1 - 2 minutes between sets.

Upper body workout should take you max 30 minutes with doing only one
exercise per body part. Throw in the same for lower body and your
workout should only take an hour.

Also--ditch the 100 sit ups. Do planks instead--works the entire core
(lower back included).

Remember to warm up for at least 5 minutes before starting to lift--
jog in place, do jacks, mountain climbers--whatever will get your
heart rate up and your joints lubricated.

Also--allow a days' rest in between work outs.

Good luck!
