Default summer workout, want to cut back amount of time

so i usually spend about 2hrs a day, 3 times a week in the gym. i
cover pretty much all of the muscle groups with an emphasis on chest,
triceps, biceps, abs, forearms. i also do 2 or 3 back exercises, 2
shoulder exercises, and 2 leg exercises. I play ultimate frisbee so
that takes care of the legs and cardio. over the summer i have an
internship and wont really have that much time to spend in the gym.
what im looking for is a program that will keep my upper body in shape
and to not really lose muscle mass or too much definition but to only
spend 1 hr, 3 times a week in the gym. again focusing on chest, arms,
and abs. real answers would be appreciated

So WHAT do you do for legs, weights or UF ? Why are you training for 2 hours
per day?

One-armed pushups, or whatever flavor of pushup you can do - handstand
pushups, etc.

I don't know why you can't do push-ups and chin-ups and crunches and
leg lifts every day. But if you're looking to maintain what you have,
you have to do what you've been doing -- logical, right? Anything
less and you get something less. (Might not be real noticeable,
though.)

I'm just trying to get back into the fighting shape of my glory days
before I get any older. But once I get "old" I plan on just doing the
basics -- bench, curls, calisthenics, and so forth. After all's said
and done, let's not forget the physiques of old timers like Eugen
Sandow or, even, the ancient Greek athletes who modeled all those
famous statues -- just genetics, and the basics.

I think it is hilarious when these dolts think that they can get their legs
trained by running around. Why do you think so many guys have decent upper
bodies and legs that look like they had Polio? What I don't get is why so
many wear shorts. If I had legs like 90% of these clowns at my gym, I would
cover them up all the time. :-)

Please stop with the lies about your "glory" days. If you are only 35, then
there is no fucking reason why you can't get into the best shape of your
life. We all know that you are a fucking liar, a fat ass and that you have
never been in shape. Stop lying about your military service too. If you were
being truthful, you would not have to post using a fake name.

well during the school year, we do sprints and plyometrics twice a
week, gets ur quads and calfs. also playing everyday during the week
gets your leg muscles pretty well since your jumping and sprinting,
running for 2 hrs. also a little bit of basic leg exercises in the
gym. over the summer im not too worried about it cause my legs dont
really get any bigger and i will be playing twice a week which will
keep them in decent shape

I don't think it's always a question of avoiding legs when lifting as
much as it is that, after running around a lot, your legs are just shot.
I've lifted after running and did OK but I think such a schedule can
turn into overtraining pretty quickly.

But generally speaking, I agree with you - guys who bench more than they
deadlift or squat are a sorry bunch.

some of us cant do deadlifts and squats cause we've had two hernias
(one on each side) and have been told that unless we want to be back
on the table to stay away from deadlifts and squats.

p.s. this group is real friendly

I've had hernia surgery on both sides, too. For most people most of the
time, it is best to learn to strengthen the area. I deadlift and squat
and it helps, not hinders, the weakened areas. Some doctors,
particularly those not associated with sports, are unnecessarily
conservative. I would see a sports medicine specialist if you haven't
already.

Bench more than squat or deadlift? Shit, I'll bet you that 90% of these guys
in my gym who have the upper bodies and no legs can curl more than they can
squat! :-) I don't have to worry about that as I can't bench press anymore.
I have no idea what it is. My left shoulder doesn't hurt, but I just can't
move any weight. I used to be a big bench presser too. I benched over 300 in
high school and did a triple with 485 when I was weighing 220, but I can
I'll bet I could not flat bench 200 now. I can do dumbbell flies with 80 lbs
though, so it makes no sense. I can do dumbbell inclines with 90s too.

If you can do inclines but not flat bench then it sounds like you may have a
problem with pec major as pec minor can take over with incline pressing. Is
there any pain?

Says 'hard man' Neil, who only a few days ago was requesting a meeting
with "whitedogshitman', for the purpose of demonstrating his ('hard
man' Neil's) prowess in knuckle-sandwiching!!

You're a hypocrite Neil and an adolescent-behavioural loon.

Do have a great weekend old chap - you know I intend to!! ;o)

I'm with you there: I have a hernia in L7 (or whatever the penultimate
disc is designated) and have been wary of deadlifts and squats. My
legs are very developed, in any case -- until recently, Army infantry
emphasized running, running, running! And I bike a lot and jog and do
the ellipticals. And being Asian, my calves are naturally round and
full. ^_^ So in terms of bodybuilding, anyway (i.e., the appearance/
illusion of strength and health), I'm fully covered there!

However, I've finally taken up very careful deadlifting and squatting
this month, and I'm totally enjoying them! Particularly deadlifting,
which gives me a real cardio rush. It's like setting the old Nordic
Track on "hard!" I'm in love all over again thanks to the deadlift.
It really is total-body. Feels like the whole first day in the Army
-- wrapped up in five mikes!

So, in answer to your original question -- aside from the basic
calisthenics movements I'd mentioned -- try the deadlift. Be careful,
practice your form, etc., but that's really a total-body exercise all
right!

Jealous, insecure little old men. Just be glad most of them are in

Heck, I've had my sports doc -- a former high school football player,
and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Orthopedic Surgeons -- tell me to
stop running forever on account of my bad back! So doctors are
useless, unless you're dying of a gunshot wound or something.

I've just started the deadlift and squat myself, and I really enjoy
them. I feel like a kid first doing push-ups or something! The
deadlift is especially fun to do. I hope -- and would guess -- that
you're right about them strengthening a bad back.

On that note, I've never understood the point of a kilfile -- just
ignore! (And I've never understood the point of people who like to
proclaim "I've killfiled you, nah nah nah nah!")

I can do dumbbell inclines, but not bar inclines. I talked to Dr. Fred
Hatfield about it years ago and he had an idea as to what it could be, but
it escapes me now. I have done plenty of heavy bench pressing in my life and
I don't have that kind of ego anymore, so I am cool doing what I am doing. I
don't have any pain in any of the movements. I just can't push the weight. I
guess I should just be glad that I don't have any pain and not worry about
it! :-)

Stop with the bullshit. NO ONE has big legs from running etc. Don't bring up
world class sprinters either as they spend as much time under the squat rack
as most bodybuilders do.

You are a deluded fuck. Do you honestly believe you have legs that look like
a bodybuilder from doing nothing but running? If that is the case, you are
THE only human on the planet with that type of genetics. Stop living your
life of delusion.

Robert's been talking tough on MFW for so many years he's run out of

I've got big muscular thighs from running. I have naturally big
calves 'cause I'm Asian. Just because you can't have them doesn't
mean everyone's deficient like you!

I never said I looked like Arnold or anything, Robert you anal-
retentive sad sack. I just look like a Greco-Roman statue in the
museum, thanks to genetics and running.

You are, Robert. You're such a sad little girlie-man, following me
around like some unrequited lover! I see you hanging onto my every
word, making an argument out of it like some unhappy girlfriend!

You're from the '70s, aren't you? I bet all the MFW hallway monitors
came of age in the '70s. You all exhibit the same anal-retentive,
passive-aggressive behavior of that "me" generation.

Bye, Robert -- try to have a nice life.

Why don't you post a pic, porky? You didn't seem to have a problem
posting a pubescent pic of yourself in that old craigslist personal ad
that you used to crow about. It seems you got embarrassed after
people realized how long ago that pic was taken, and you took it down.

I like that description POW as it is so accurately describes the

would still like to.
