Default teen lifting

I am 13 and naturally strong. I have been lifting with 10lb. dumbbells
for a while, however I would also like to have some lighter weights
just for increasing muscle size. What weight would you recommend for
doing a lot of reps to pump up my arms quickly? I'd really like to only
have to buy one pair of weights. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid
buying multiple light weights. Appreciate whatever I can get.

Hi my name is Allan and I own http://www.toneatronic.com/tone/index.php
and http://www.executiveedge1.com/
As a trainer you should add weights slowly . Maybe lift 2 1/2 lbs more
each week. Its not much at the start but it adds up quickly.

Safety is your #1 issue right now now and form . Do IT SLOWLY.
Have a truly great day , everything is possible!

Lighter than 10lb. dumbbells?

How many reps and what exercises with those dumbbells?

Regardless, you won't be increasing size with weights lighter than ten
pounds. Two cents and all.

> What weight would you recommend for doing

I curl 40 pound dumbbells, but if I'm just trying to get some blood in
my arms for that Ahnuld moment of pumpitude then I'll use the 15s,
20s, or 25s. So, with that as an example, perhaps take half of what you
can do for 8 to 12 reps and then pump like crazy.

Iirc, Mike Mentzer, former Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitor,
started lifting at age 12.

I was fifteen years old when I got my first weight set and remember
reading that beginning lifters should stick with bench, chins or
pulldowns, rows, and squats and forget about direct biceps and triceps
work entirely.

In fact, at your age, simply eating a healthy diet and getting nine
hours of sleep may just be the best approach to gaining size.

Best of luck.

I left the URLs because, what the heck, it's not bad advice - safety,
add weights slowly, yeah. But that NAME! God. That is some funny stuff,
Allan. Toneatronic! That's gotta be the MOST 1950s era name going.
Suh-WEET!

> everything is possible!

That last, however, is bullshit.

Everything is NOT possible. I'll go so far as to say that it is NOT
possible for anyone to post anything funnier than "toneatronic" this
month, perhaps the entire year. Good grief, this might be like the
Halley's Comet of humor. That is just the BEST!

Again, thanks. Omigod.

Go to a local sporting goods store and get a pair of spin-lock
dumbbell handles and add plates to it. Plates are around 40
cents/pound. Get a couple of 1-1/4 and 2-1/2 lb. plates. Make
sure the handles have a rubber washer on the inside so they
tighten properly. Get more plates when you get stronger.

Are you doubting the authenticity of baseballboy828 needs less then
ten pound weights? Or toneatronic who recommends adding the
non-existent 2.5 pound increments?

The OP is (or presents themself as) a 13-year-old. Certainly there are
children who would require less than ten-pound weights.

I have "plates" that weigh just over a quarter-pound. Iirc, I've
mentioned them previously in MFW. Six .26 lb washers and four .39 lb
washers. All of which fit a standard 27 mm bar.

And if the hardware store is not your thing, there actually are
fractional plates. Hardly non-existent, fwiw.

I don't understand any of it. Anyway, regarding teen lifting I found
these links.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt423i1w6vs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71denvCLxP0

She's cute, she's young, she's got nice smile, she's got some ass,
she's quite flexible.

Yeah. I'd like to spend some time with this girl.

BTW - there is also Tommy Kono having a lecture in the background. He
makes some sense too, but not as much sense as this girl's ass.

I thought you said you were gay.

WAIT! THAT WAS A JOKE!

Seriously, while I'm waiting for my dial-up to transfer the YouTube

Perhaps. But if he is lifting less than ten pounds he doesn't need a
weight set. Anything around the house will do. Plus his mom might
not what to admit her little boy is growing up and refuse to buy one.

I started by curling a chair with stuff on it, pullups on a door, and
pushups. In other words I used whatever I could put together until I
had access to a set of weights.

It sure does. Why by the time a year goes by, he'll be curling 140
pound db. Good thing he's naturally strong.

I've got a thirteen year old son who lifts with me. Here's some of the
advice I give him.

I stress that he has to have firm control over the weight at all times -
no swinging, go slowly, breath the entire time.

He should work the big muscles, do compound joints, like bench press,
deadlift, squatting, seated row.

You can use anything heavy as dumbells: fill some milk jugs with sand,
for example. Another handy idea is exercise tubes: they are small, easy
to pack and make a great Christmas present idea. Here's a link to what
we have:
http://secure.gofit.net/view_product.php?product=238

I like the idea of the spin collar dumbbells, but I also like exercise
balls like http://secure.gofit.net/view_product.php?product=246 (or you
can get them for about $16 at Walmart.) These are good for doing situps
on and I like them for ball squats.

Learn about the proper form for exercises at www.exRx.net. For example,
the proper form for a dumbbell squat looks like this:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...s/DBSquat.html

Good luck. As someone else said, just eating and sleeping will help you
grow at this age. But I think a bit of weight training can help you
grow into the shape you actually WANT.

Another patron, Tom Anderson, iirc, pointed out that baseballboy828 may
have simply been a false post offered as a set-up toneatronic's spam.
I'm inclined to believe that was the case.

Yeaaaah.

I'm inclined to agree, however I'd wait for the heavy stuff until age
15. I started at 15 and 6'0" and eventually hit the wall at 6'1" at,
maybe, age 17 tops? Anyway, many, many moons ago.

She has him doing drugs already?

That brings to mind the local news... an immigrant has both a wife and a mistress
living in adjacent apartments, has kids with both. Both know he manufactures and
deals drugs.

Last week, he beats up the mistress. His wife (!!) bails him out.

All along, he threatens to kill the mistresses baby if she ever crosses him.
Guess what? He killed the baby with a GHB overdose this week after calling
the mistress at work and saying he is going to do exactly that.

Just another day in liberal paradise.
