And in other aircraft carrier news:

Navy decommissions carrier U.S.S. John F. Kennedy
by The Associated Press
MAYPORT, Fla. - Sailors in blue lined the deck of the aircraft carrier
USS John F. Kennedy today as guns boomed to commemorate the
decommissioning of "Big John'' after nearly 40 years of service.

Officers gathered in front of a screen displaying a large American
flag, and speakers echoed the words of the carrier's namesake,
including the famed line from President Kennedy's 1961 inauguration:
"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for
your country.''

"What a bittersweet day,'' said Capt. Todd Zecchin, the Kennedy's
final commanding officer. "It is a glorious breath of life we've
filled the ship with.''

The Kennedy was active in both Iraq wars and launched aircraft into
hot spots around the globe during its service. At 1,050 feet long, it
carried a crew of about 4,600 and 70 combat aircraft.

Lt. Cmdr. Vince U. Webster, the ship's administrative officer, born a
month before President Kennedy's assassination in 1963, served two
tours on the carrier and asked to come back for the final chapter in
the Kennedy's legacy. He said the decommission brought mixed emotions.

"Happy that a lot of sailors on board will have closure so they can
move on to their next career, but sad because this great warship will
never be under way again,'' he said.

The warship was christened in May 1967 by Kennedy's then 9-year-old
daughter, Caroline, and entered Navy service the next year.

Its in-port cabin was designed by the first lady, Jacqueline Kennedy,
and is the only room on a U.S. Navy ship with wood paneling, officials
said. Among its pictures is one showing the president sailing with his
daughter.

The cabin will be headed to a Navy museum. The carrier will be towed
to Philadelphia, where it will be placed on inactive status.

Chief Petty Officer Aaron Shelenberger, 39, plans to retire shortly
after the Kennedy is decommissioned. The Philippines native became a
U.S. citizen earlier this month and sang the national anthem at a
naturalization ceremony aboard the Kennedy.

"I'm part of history,'' Shelenberger said. "With the Kennedy, it's
special. You are part of the closing of this chapter.''

One of two remaining fossil fuel-powered aircraft carriers in the
Navy, the ship supported Operation Desert Shield in Iraq in 1990, and
was deployed in February 2002 to the North Arabian Sea during
Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

It also supported Operation Iraqi Freedom in June 2004, and its
airwing dropped more than 54,000 pounds of bombs on Iraq.

The Kennedy, based in Florida since 1995, recently served as a
training platform for Navy pilots to obtain carrier landing
qualification. The Navy suspended the ship's flight operations about a
year ago, citing faulty landing equipment. /From
http://www.dailymail.com/story/News/...John-F-Kennedy
aka http://tinyurl.com/284xqs

At some point between my arrival in Norfolk, Virginia, USA and my
departure upon my discharge, I set foot on the Kennedy for I-have-no-
idea-what. But I *do* remember someone telling me that sailors were
lost for days on that ship. I remember that being very comforting. The
Kennedy had literally thousands of sailors onboard while my ship, the
USS Richard E. Byrd was a tin can with fewer than 350 total
crewmembers - officer and enlisted.

Fair winds and following seas, Big John.

Do us all a favour, stop firing at British troops you are killing more of
our men than the Iraqi's through your incompetence. You killed more of our
men than the enemy during the earlier Desert Storm.

Don't you mean "you're silly"?

Anyway, what do you think Bush will do if Iran sinks a U.S carrier,
killing thousands of troops in one attack? That is a real possibility
when the U.S attacks Iran. You don't think he'd bring out the tactical
nukes in that event? Bush is playing with fire; attacking Iran is
crossing a red line,

They were probably following another "Monty" who just wanted to do

Maybe, but you sound like one of those Americans who thought that it
would be all so easy in Iraq. The Iraqis would greet you with flowers,
the new Iraq would be a beacon of democracy in the Arab would, and the
regimes would shortly fall in Syria and Iran too. It's just all so
easy isn't it? Rest assured, my friend, that if the U.S attacks Iran,
the U.S forces in the M East will be in a world of pain. Iran will
also be in a world of pain, but they can take it. They were in a world
of pain for 8 years during the war with Iraq and took 500,000 deaths
and we're willing to take a lot more had a stalemate not been
reached.

No, I'm one of those Americans that operated for three years at sea

So how many people have died because of how you Brits divided the
middle east in the 19th century? You know, mixing red ants with black
ants and calling it an ant hill?

talk about incompetence...

Admittedly none, but tell me, from your experience, how much of a good
idea is it for the U.S to start a war with Iran now? And could they
achieve either a) the destruction of Iran's nuclear program and/or b)
the overthrow of the Islamic regime? And could they achieve all this
at the same time as protecting their troops in Iraq, and their
interests in the rest of the region?

Promising the same piece of land to loads of different people must have
seemed like a good idea at the time.

Also it held up a shining beacon of democracy for the middle-east when
the CIA with help from BP and the British secret services had the
democratically elected government of Mohammad Mossadeq in Iran replaced
by the shah and his secret police. I just can't understand why these
people are suspicious of the west!

Well, I don't particularly see how my experience directly relates to
the questions you ask below. I was addressing, through my experience,
the survivability of a U.S. super-carrier. But I'll give your
questions a shot.

>how much of a good
>idea is it for the U.S to start a war with Iran now?

Not a very good idea at all. But the Iranian regime, which has done
it's level best to destabilize the entire Middle East (*not* the
Americans) for going on 30 years now sure could use a well-deserved
slapping down.

>And could they
>achieve either a) the destruction of Iran's nuclear program and/or b)
>the overthrow of the Islamic regime? And could they achieve all this
>at the same time as protecting their troops in Iraq, and their
>interests in the rest of the region?

All this could be achieved if the rest of the world, most especially
Great Britain, Canada, Spain, Italy, and Germany, had not chosen to
follow the example of their French brothers-in-lack-of-arms (I exclude
Australia from this list since, having done the heavy lifting for the
Commonwealth for YEARS, the Aussies still possess their international
testicular fortitude).

But as is, with only the little help that true stand-up allies like
Australia (and other courageous Eastern European countries) can
provide, my answer is no... no it cannot and should not be done as
long as we are in Iraq.

But if the U.S. was *not* in Iraq, the Iranian military would fold
almost (but not quite) as easily as the Iraqi military folded. But the
result would be the same... everyday people dying because of cowards
(supported by leftists and liberals such as yourself) strapping bombs
on the brain-washed in order to kill the innocent in the markets,
schools, and mosques. And, after doing so, it wouldn't take a split
second for you and your leftist, liberal fellow-travelers in the mass
media to blame the U.S. instead of blaming the cowards and the
brain-washed with the bombs.

Congratulations on your full support of the attempted destruction of
Western Civilization. I'm sure when the savages achieve their ultimate
goal of the New Caliphate, they'll remember your alliance with them
and treat you with dignity and respect.
