| | | Vacation Regimen Usually when I go on vacation I join a gym. This is, however, a huge pain
in the ass. My next vacation will be for less than a week and I want an
alternative. Please advise me, what would be a good regimen that I can do
without weights in a hotel room. I will have elastics with me, and my
110lb girlfriend (bicep curls?).
My current workout is a low rep strength building routine. I do a three
day split, torso push -> lower body -> torso pull -> break. I insert
an additional break day to alter the modulo every month or so.
What do other MFW readers do when they are on vacation? Please be
specific! Any and all advice will help!

I chose a resort where I could do both. Didn't scuba though; just
snorkeled. But I did train at their gym 4 times during the week. |

Elastics are good for (p)rehab. Girlfriend can be good for weighted
pushups and step-ups. With just a floor you can do a lot of different
gymnastic exercises, but I doubt that without enough skill you could
reach intensity levels needed for effective stimulation of hypertrophy.
If you have something to hang from, various versions of pull-ups will
obviously work well. Depending on your relative strength levels you
can use a fraction of your body-weight up to weighted one-armed
pull-ups. Good triceps exercise it to perform body-weight triceps
extensions. You grab an edge of bench or chair, lean against it, and
do triceps extensions this way. Elastics can be used as an assistance
for natural GHRs.

Obviously you can't do that routine with no skill at gymnastics and
no equipment. Do something different.

I go to parties and get drunk in a nice company. Then I have to
cure my hangover, then I repeat, then somehow vacations are over.

I was thinking of doing some bodyweight exercises and maybe some
plyometric bodyweight exercises. Just something to scratch the itch while
I'm away from my beloved gym.

Don't be afraid to take a week off. Let's face it, if you go to the gym,
most people are over trained. Even when I was competing at a high level in
bodybuilding, taking a week off was never a problem unless I had a show in
the near future.

That was my original plan. I feel overtrained right now and I was planning

I don't snorkel much any more. The last time I did that in the Keys,
I watched the divers down on the bottom of the reef and decided I was
going to get certified. That was two years ago. I've now logged 36
dives. I don't know if I've ever worked out while on vacation either. |

Yes, but the water is cold. Water temps are about 20-30 degrees
colder on the Pacific coast (California) compared to the Atlantic
(Florida). Google rec.scuba.locations. There's a thread in rec.scuba
right now about Catalina Island. |

Tell her that between parties, swimming and hot sex you'll have no

Well, we want each other to look good on the beach. Here's an old picture
of her: http://www.jackerypyro.com/contact.html as you can see, she
requires a bit of maintenance herself (-:

I don't think so. I have been around gyms FAR longer than you have and
have trained hundreds of people over the years. From what I have seen,
most people who actually get to the gym think that "more is better" and
tend to train FAR too much.

You look very proud of her, and she looks very proud of herself too. It's
rare to see such deep understanding among couples. ;-)
I stand by what I wrote. She'd probably be happier if you she couldn't
take you for granted.

As you know so much then I obviously don't need to point out to you the
difference between training too much and being overtrained.

"WAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!" he yelled at Neil's kill file.
You're both naysaying jerks, however Rob's statement is spot-on.
Taking a week off never killed anyone. Um, unless they, well, got
killed while they were taking, er, the week off.
Seriously, a) the gym patron who is overtraining can always use the
recharge of a week's vacation from the gym. b) The gym patron who's
not training hard enough might be slacking because they're bored with
the gym, so a week off might help them find their motivation or renew
their enthusiasm as the | | |
