Default Waist pain during controlled squats

Whenever I do controlled squats, I get a waist pain which lasts a
couple of days and then goes away. I wear a belt when I do the
exercise. By controlled squat, I mean not the free squats. Has anybody
experienced this? I don't want this to cause any permanent damage.

Just noticed you said you wear a belt. Can I suggest starting from
scratch with your squat exercises. Performing a squat is actually one
of the basic movement patterns the human body should be able to
execute without the use of supports or controlled path of movement.
Ditch the belt and move out in to some open space. Start with some
basic bodyweight squats and get a professional to watch you perform
the movement pattern to make sure your form is correct.

As you get better at controlling and balancing the movement and not
requiring the use of belt, your body will learn to fire certain
muscles deep in your torso to support and protect your back, thus
strengthening your ability to perform that movement without any pain.

As you become competent you can start adding weights again. The power
of being able to perform a good free squat will outstrip a controlled
or fixed path squat for functional and aesthetic purposes every time.

Hope that helps

Why do all of these guys with "fitness" sites all look like they have never
seen a weight in their lives?

I still have no clue as to what type of squat you are doing.

I am not sure what you mean by "controlled" squats or if you are even
squatting correctly. So that makes it difficult to answer. I have
experienced some hip pain before doing quarter squats. That is when
you throw on a bunch more weight but only go a quarter of the way
down. I have seen many people squat like this just to satisfy their
egos so they can do a lot of weight. I would suggest lowering the
weight and practicing good form. Someone posted a vid link in the
another thread. Check it out and see how your squat form is.

Can you point me to the video link? I think Tim's advice is right. I
should do a correct form first. By controlled squats, I mean, the bar
is controlled. That is, it is moves up or down in just one direction.
It seems safer to me.

Here is the vid:
<http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6529481301858251744&q=The+FitCast&hl=en>

He talks in great length about form in the first half of the vid. I
suspect you need to lower the weight and go further down to reach
parallel. Perhaps you also need to practice flexibility. After
watching the video you should have a better idea of how good your form
is.

BTW that is likely a Smith Machine you are using. That alone might be
causing you some problems. Maybe someone else can give some pointers
on how to use one effectively. The natural range of motion in a
squat is not straight up and down for most people.

I think he refers to the Smith.
