Although i would never carry any substantial piece of metal into an
MRI, I hadn't considered the fact that the magnet could essentially
cause various safeties to fail to engage. Interesting.

John,
Take a look at the photo. Does that look like a 1911 to you? It looks more
like a SW 645 type to me, but it is not a very good photo either.

I could be having a brain fart, but, not even including the "COLT"
stamped into the slide and the Colt medallion on the grip panels, it
looks EXACTLY like a 1911 type Colt. What am I missing?

Says Colt in big letters in fugure 2B and figure 2A says "Fig. 2A.
‹Photographs of 1991 A-1.45 caliber semiautomatic pistol (Colt's
Manufacturing, Hartford, CT). Actual gun involved in incident is shown."

Three separate safeties on that gun did not mean much against that big
magnet.
They referred to this as a "spontaneous discharge". Is this an actual
incident of a gun firing itself?
I also found it interesting that the gun did not cycle after firing. I
suppose a big honking magnet would interfere with a normal cycle action.
Another thought, police often require a complete write up on any gun
"accidents". I wonder how that report would have read. Although I think
that the MRI operator was at fault here. |

You're missing Fig. 2, apparently: http://www.ajronline.org/cgi/content...78/5/1092/FIG2
But, yeah, it does look like the 1911 I carried around as an ASROC
rover back in the day.

Not at all, David. Two facts. One is that the Fig shows a gun with
'COLT M1991A1' engraved on the barrel and two is that it also happens
to look like the service pistol I carried around while I was in the
Navy which was an M1911A1.

I apologize. You were not messin' with me. You just don't know anything
about firearms. Ignorance can be forgiven.
The "COLT M1991A1" IS a 1911 type Colt. Please note the "1911 type", a
general descriptive term.

I accept your apology.

Correct. )
> You just don't know anything about firearms.
Correct again. Basically. What I know encompasses:
a) Don't point a gun at anyone, even if you think it's unloaded.
b) Don't draw a gun (well, otoh... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...1191911AAA.jpg
) unless you intend to actually shoot someone.
c) The barrel points "that way."
Pretty much it.
Regardless, I earned marksman with the .45 and qualified with an M-14.
Also qualified with a 12 gauge (which amounts to shooting a hay bale)
and was a .50 cal machine gun operator. I could strip one down, put it
back together, set the timing, and fire off rounds. Could I do it
today, after not having seen a machine gun in nearly 20 years? No.

And those photos tell a pretty interesting story. The paint marks
show that it struck muzzle first, right on the recoil spring plug.
The magnetic field actually sucked the firing pin right into the
primer! |

This member is hereby disqualified from the June humour award for
blatant canvassing, electioneering and offering veiled threats to the
Chairman.
Let that be a lesson to the rest of you!
Have a great weekend lads (there are no lasses these days) - you know

Hrmm, well, on my way to the paper shredder with those tax files you
asked me to, uh, file, I went past Charles' expansive, luxurious,
breathtaking office. And, well, I noticed Charles has June Humour
Awards plaques already engraved and hanging on his wall. I didn't
enter his office, of course, and, hey, the far wall is some hundred
yards away from the doorway, so I couldn't see, but I suspect that
Charles has also told his immediate family a similar tale.
Yes, you might ask, if the plaques are a hundred yards from my eyes
then how do I know they're Humour Awards plaques?
Well, the neon, of course.
Neon signs with bright, eye-squinting lettering that blaze the
message: 'CHARLES! WINNER! GOLD! SILVER! BRONZE HUMOUR AWARD WINNER
FOR JUNE 2007! SOD OFF, DAVID, YOU'RE JUST A V.P.!!!' offer a, what
was that word you used? Subtle! I'd say it's a subtle hint of Charles'
expectations.
Anyway, I trust the Humour Committee will make the right choices,
David. Be at ease.
