Just to be clear: I believe you're a freaking moron, okay?
Now, about the article, the author states that:
a) weightlifting improves jumping and
b) if you are a pretty good jumper, you might make a pretty good
weightlifter
I think the author may have a chicken versus egg story. Does
weightlifting improve jumping or is the fact that a weightlifter has
that snap something that was there from the beginning and not
something that lifting itself developed or improved upon? I agree,
though, that good jumpers may also prove to be good Olympic lifters.

Take your choice of any of the three following paragraphs from the
link, print it out on glossy paper, wrap it around a hamster, and
shove it up your ass.
"When Ken Patera (the first American to clean and press and clean and
jerk 500 lb. (227 kg) was training with me in 1972, I told him that I
had read that Paul Anderson (1956 Olympic Champion and considered the
strongest man that ever lived) could do a standing long jump of 10' (3
m)."
"He said, "Let me try that again," so he did and this time we measured
11' (3.35 m)! Ken said he was sure he could go further, but the
landing was hurting his knees since he weighed 335 lb. (152 kg) at the
time."
"The gym had three 10' x 10' (3 m x 3 m) platforms that were raised
about 4" (10 cm) off the concrete floor and were 10' (3 m) apart.
David Rigert (1976 90-kg Olympic champion) would do standing jumps
from platform to platform and back several times as part of his
workout, very easy, casually, and just sort of playing around. "

Sure.
Strong quads and glutes and the ability to explode.
> Would they have made proportionally greater distances if given a

Eh... no.
A jump from a stand-still more or less mimics a deep squat, and the
bodyweight is still light enough to release it against gravity.
For a running squat you need a different build, a-la Carl Lewis.
Our speed skaters have programs that look almost the same as what
weightlifters do.

You probably don't realize who you are dealing with here. I am an 'enabler'

little.

The battle against the sinister cyber troll and stalker John M
Williams, aka "The Enforcer", who was the self-appointed ruler &
moderator of MFW, was long, bitter and of titanic proportions.
It was eventually won when old Fatty Williams collapsed as the result
of the escalating use of his own despicable tactics being turned back
upon him, and he turned tail and ran like the posturing coward he
really is.
A classic example of good winning over evil...

It's a good thing... :-)
Granted, I still learn a lot on Usenet, but I get a lot of laughs too.
And I do honestly try to contribute, when I can.

I'm much the same. Usenet isn't too serious and is primarily for
relaxation. If someone has a serious question on strength and
conditioning I try to help - I'm really not much on bodybuilding or
nutrition questions.
And I read MFW for the laughs and relaxatin.

Proper googling is a wondrous reference resource, if used selectively.

Only if you give a flying f...
My passion is training high performance athletes. I leave the nutrition
