Default Whats a good Tricep exercise?

What is a good exercise for the triceps?
Due to some pain/injury, I am sort of limited in what I can do, so Im
looking for new exercises to try.

First some background info:

As part of my workout, I usually do the following exercises:
pullups with weights, clean & press, dips with weights, behind the
head tricep extension.

A few months ago I started having a lot of pain the back of the
shoulder/tricep area.
In the back, near the armpit, where the bottom of the deltoid and the
top of the tricep meet.

It hurt a lot when I did the clean and press (when I lowered the
weight, it would pull down on my shoulder, since it was heavy) and
when I was at the bottom of the pullup and just starting to start
pulling.
And also when I was doing the behind the neck tricep extension (french
press?), there was pain, because when the weight is above/behind my
head, it would pull/stretch the tricep/shoulder area and caused it to
hurt.

Someone told me that it could be a combination of those pullups w/
weights and dips w/weights that could be causing the pain. (teres
minor?)

Now back to the original question, what are some good tricep
exercises?
Close grip bench - I already do reverse close grip bench.
Dips with weights - Im hesitant to start dipping again, because I dont
want the pain to come back.
Skull crushers - I tried it over the weekend, and even though I was
using light weight, I felt a lot of "pressure" (almost pain) in my
elbow joint.
Tricep pushdowns (straight bar/rope/handle/etc) - I do these
sometimes.

Thanks

You need to stop and rest that injured shoulder or you won't be doing
any upper body training for much longer...

I took 2 months off.
and there is no pain now.

BUT, I do avoid exercises that I think might cause the pain to come
back:
dips with weights, french press and the clean and press.

While I do still do pullups with weights, I use a lot less weight than
before.
Oh, and Im using a different grip...instead of a pullup grip, Im using
a v-bar (from a cable row) and hang that over the bar.
I feel that with the closer grip the tricep/shoulder/armpit area is
less "exposed" and is in a slightly stronger position.

Thats why Im posting this....hopefully I can find a good tricep
exercise to replace my dips.

Standing tricep extensions probably aren't a good idea, then - you have
the should stretched out at the starting position. I'd suggest lying
tricep extensions, but you say you get pain with those too. Oh - and i
guess your "French press" is another name for a standing tricep extension
anyway.

It sounds like you want something where your upper arm stays low -
pushdowns might be your best bet. Did it hurt when you did those?

Or some kind of 'tricep row' - get a cable station with a pulley about
navel height, put your upper arms to your side, and hold the handle with
your forearms pointing forward; pull your hands down to your sides,
keeping your body steady. I don't know if this is an already-existing
exercise. I'm also not sure it'll keep the load of your shoulders - your
posterior deltoid will probably have to be working to keep your shoulder
in place here.

Yeah.

Its the one where you sit, and the dumbbell goes from behind your head
to above your head.

no pain.
But Im trying to find out some other good exercises.
Im sure I can do kickbacks, but kickbacks arent as good as close grip
bench or dips.

Im going for mass and strength.

Thanks

The next time you try this, try keeping the elbows in - don't let them
flare out. Most people don't bother with this detail on this exercise
and for many, it helps.

Consider an Arnold press instead.

Okay, same as a standing tricep extension but, er, sitting down.

Well, that's a start.

Why? All tricep exercises do basically the same thing to your body, so i'd
suggest picking the one that's most comfortable and sticking with it. You
won't get any extra benefit from doing four different tricep isolations.

I honestly can't do any better than pointing you at this:

http://www.exrx.net/Lists/ExList/Arm...l#anchor122387

And suggesting you try them. These two:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...verTriExt.html
http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/...ingTriExt.html

Look like they might not stress your shoulder too much, but the proof of
the pudding is in the eating.

Ah, aren't we all!

Dips are the best triceps excercise that I have in my routine. Next up
may be close grip bench presses. You said that you are fearful of Dips
aggravating your injury. Try a few reps with no added weight, just your
bodyweight. If that causes no pain then gradually start adding weight
back on. If you try carefully you shouldn't do any damage and it would
be worth it to see if you can keep doing this great triceps builder.

You can try to do different exercises but if you experiencing constant or
significant pain, you should have the affected area checked out by a
physician. Some pain is typical when weight-training, I know for example
when I do my chest workout my chest may be "sore" for 1 to 1-1/2 days.

Also you may want to examine your lifting technique - because improper
form
can cause injury too! I know I had some elbow pain when doing EZ-Bar
curls,
but I started using lifting gloves w/ wrist wraps and bam good to go - no
more elbow pain.

Allow your muscle to recouperate for a week and then lower the weight on
the
appropriate exercises, and see if you still have pain.

Hope this helps,

I tried it the other day with 10 reps with 45lbs, and while there was
no pain, my shoulder felt stiff. Even though I had done shoulder
presses and laterals earlier with no problems.
Of course this could be due to the fact that it has been months since
I did dips, and my shoulder was "rusty" for that motion.

Im a little afraid to start adding more weight because....by the time
you feel pain, the damage is already done (even a little damage).
I probably had shoulder damage even before I started feeling the pain.
Someone said something interesting when I complained about resting for
3 weeks and still feeling pain.
"3 weeks rest is'nt enough because it was a lot more than 3 weeks of
strain that caused it in the first place"

Note to OP;

You probably have your palms under the DB, right?

Since the lower arm doesnt rotate 180 degrees, 150 at best, you have no
choice to let them flare out a bit.
Forcing them in will strain both elbows and wrists.

Bad idea.

Helps what?

Yeah right.
