OFTEN-RIDICULED CITY WITH UK’S CHEAPEST BEERS SET TO BE ONE OF BEST STAYCATION DESTINATIONS

An often-ridiculed seaside city on England's east coast is set to be one of the best hidden gem staycation destinations thanks to its cheap beer and unexpected Hollywood links.

Hull is unlikely to be the first place that comes to mind for a staycation, and perhaps not even the second or third. But the East Yorkshire city has been crowned one of the best city's to visit in the UK thanks to its affordability and culture offerings.

Entertainment and culture outlet Time Out put Hull as its second in its 2024 list of UK destinations to visit. The list was based on affordability and ease of access.

While Bristol nabbed the top spot, Hull appears to have shaken off the ridicule it once had as an unattractive destination. Its rise in people's estimations could possibly have its roots in the investment Hull received when it was named the UK's City of Culture in 2017.

Visitors looking for a cheap pint by the seaside could do worse than Hull which was named the country's place for most affordable beet. Last year, the average price of a pint would set punters back on average £3.33.

According to TripAdvisor, the city offers a wide range of activities for families, groups and solo travellers. The Deep aquarium is listed as the top destination, with the Streetlife Museum of Transport coming in second and the iconic Humber Bridge settling into the third spot.

Other key destinations include Wilberforce House Museum, Hull Minster, Hull & East Riding Museum and Ferens Art Gallery. Those keen for a taste of Hollywood without having to book a costly trip to LA will also have something to do in Hull.

The "It Must Be Hullywood" trail includes locations from UK classic comedies Only Fools and Horses to Netflix smash hit series The Crown. Councillor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: "Hull is fast becoming a firm favourite with production companies across the world with word spreading of what a hidden gem the city is.

“We’ve hosted many Hollywood stars and some of Hull’s prime locations have been completely transformed, attracting visitors from far and wide. This new trail offers sightseers a chance to see some of our most popular sites so far and spot some of the buildings and streets they’ve seen in their favourite shows."

Members of the LGBTQ+ community will also find a number of welcoming venues according to Time Out. "Next on the Time Out list comes Hull, which has become a surprising capital for the UK’s LGBTQ+ community in 2023, with an influx of new gay bars and clubs including Monroe’s, Unit 49, and Cherry’s in the city’s 'Freedom Quarter'," the review said.

Hull is about three hours from London on the train and takes less time from northern cities such as Leeds or Manchester. But those driving would be treated to travelling over the Humber Bridge.
